What AC repair costs in Columbia
Fixr's 2026 guide puts the typical AC repair at $250 to $700, averaging $375. Small electrical parts like capacitors and contactors live at the bottom of that band. A failed compressor or evaporator coil can cost thousands, and that is the point where a replacement quote deserves a look.

Why one Columbia bill comes in higher than another
- When you call. An evening or weekend visit in the middle of a heat wave often carries a surcharge. Ask before the truck rolls.
- Where the equipment sits. An air handler in an attic that bakes all July, or in a tight crawlspace, takes longer to reach and work on.
- Refrigerant type. A leak has to be located and repaired, or the top-off leaks out by next summer. And the old R-22 costs far more per pound than R-410A.
- Chain failures. A capacitor that let go can take a contactor or a fan motor down with it.
- The drive. Out past Hallsville, Harrisburg or Rocheport, ask whether the trip charge goes up.
Keeping the invoice close to the quote
- Find out the diagnostic fee in advance, and whether it is credited if you approve the repair.
- Get a written price, with the parts named, before anyone starts.
- Ask how long parts and labor are warrantied.
- If someone quotes a compressor or a coil on a system past 10 years, ask them to price a replacement too. The $5,000 rule.
- Inside Columbia city limits, ask to see the company's City of Columbia mechanical license. How to check.
Already holding a number? The quote check walks through red flags and questions. Leaning toward a new system? City of Columbia Utilities pays $800 to $1,200 on qualifying replacements. Rebate rules.
What Boone County homeowners ask us
What is a typical AC repair bill?
Fixr's 2026 national figures put most repairs between $250 and $700, averaging $375. This Old House says common fixes run $150 to $650, inside an overall span of $100 to $1,000.
What does it cost to replace the whole AC?
Fixr lists a new central system at $5,800 to $14,400 installed, averaging $8,750. Tonnage and ductwork move the number, and Columbia Utilities customers may get $800 to $1,200 back.
Why is the repair bill so much bigger than the part?
The visit and the technician's time make up most of the charge. The part itself is usually the smaller piece.
